Your Halloween Soundtrack

Two years ago, I petitioned to the world, i.e. to the loyal, super-awesome readers of this blog, the need for Halloween songs. And I wasn’t talking about scary sounds to hear in the dark like you might hear at one of those $72 Haunted House in Kansas City’s West Bottoms or Dallas’ Deep Ellum. I mean real songs. Pop songs. Rock songs. Rap songs. Songs that aren’t made for Halloween but sound like Halloween.

So…I decided to make a Halloween soundtrack this year. You’ll see some songs from that old list and plenty of new ones. You won’t see the “Monster Mash” by Bobby Pickett because who the hell would honestly want to hear that song at a party. Feel free to add some Halloween songs you can think of in the comments section.

And if you have a Halloween party this weekend, I highly recommend all of these. Or bring it to a party if you’re not throwing one. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

“Amazing,” by Kanye West
Yeah, “I’m a monster. I’m a maven.” This song will do just fine. It’s also a really good song for warming up for a basketball game.

“Dance the Way I Feel,” by Ou est le Swimming Pool
A somewhat chilling beat and just a great song to boot. And man, what a name for a band.

“Du Hast” by Rammstein
For those who don’t “habla German” it means “YOU HATE.” Rammstein, in addition to being known as perhaps the only band to have a dismembered face on its album cover, might also be perhaps the only band to feature arson in a music video. WONDERFUL, isn’t it?

“Disturbia” by Rihanna
Rihanna is a pretty strange woman. This song is about a disease of the mind that can control you and this isn’t even half-crazy compared to the recent music she’s been making. Oh, and I just found out that Matt Kemp used to date Rihanna. Props to that guy.

“Mouth” by Bush
Has anyone heard the new Bush song? Man, it sucks. Good thing Bush used to be awesome. As good as “Machine Head” and “Glycerine” were, I think “Mouth” is their best. And definitely the most SPOOKTACULAR!

“Psycho Bitch” by Tech N9ne
You could choose a lot of songs by Tech N9ne for a Halloween soundtrack given that he pretty much decided to worship Satan for one of his albums. But this one is clearly the best, sampling from the Michael Myers movies. Well done, Tech. This is truly an awesome rap song.

“Thriller” by Michael Jackson
You knew this had be on here somewhere. 99 million views for this video. Bieber, you better get to work!!

“Scream” by Master P
Bet you’ve never heard this song before. And let me apologize for introducing it to you. The chorus, sung by Master P: “Scream, UGHHHHHHHH!, I hear him coming.” Yeah, that’s why No Limit Records is less relevant than the cassette tape these days.

“Sad Sad City” by Ghostland Observatory
I’m going to this concert on Saturday.

“Dragula” by Rob Zombie
Who do you think would play Rob Zombie if they made a biopic about his life? I’m guessing it wouldn’t be Rob Lowe.

“Monster” by Kanye West, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and Bon Iver
Best rap song of 2010, hands down. Nicki Minaj’s verse is one of the best in rap history.

“She Wolf” by Shakira
Embarrassing fact about my life: I own a Shakira CD and I STILL listen to it. Also, this video, if you’ve ever seen it, is arguably NSFW.

“Blue Monday” by Orgy
I forgot this song existed until 3.7 minutes ago.

“Walking On A Dream” by Empire of the Sun
OK, so maybe not a Halloween song but I feel like this song fits any occasion.

“Good Old Fashioned Nightmare” by Matt & Kim
This song is actually about Kim’s former job as a nanny.

“Dracula’s Wedding” by Andre 3000 and Kelis
How do you know you want to marry someone? If they “make great peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, VAN HEL-SIIING.”

“Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga

Gaga is a pretty scary artist. You could also say this or this is a Halloween song.

“Disarm” by Smashing Pumpkins
All right, I’ll stop here. Smashing Pumpkins has the name of a Halloween band and this song has the sound. Everyone enjoy your Halloweekend!

I know you already put a Lady Gaga song on the list, but I think that “Monster” by her would be a pretty good Halloween song.
