The Sounds of March

I love pep-band music.

No, really, I love pep-band music. It’s one of my favorites things about basketball, one of my favorites things about college, one of my favorite things about life.

And of all the months of the year, March is THE month for pep-band music. Parents and students and fans are packing gyms across the country for high school state tournaments*. And the NCAA Tournament field was unveiled on Sunday. And this means that pep bands will be blasting out their renditions for the better part of the next month.

*Spent two days in Columbia at the Missouri state basketball tournament last weekend. The coolest song I heard a pep band play: Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”

In honor of March Madness, here’s a collection of the best pep-band songs I could find on YouTube — with a hat tip to Pablo S. Torre.

1. So first, for obviously reasons, we’ll start with a band from VCU playing “Rolling in the Deep.”

Album: Katy B – “On A Mission”

Mark’s post about the beauty of dancing got me thinking about which albums are the most danceable, start to finish. Daft Punk, Hot Chip, and LCD Soundsystem have each crafted outrageously dance-y records in the past few years, but I think Robyn’s “Body Talk” wins, followed by Katy B’s debut full-length, “On A Mission.”

Living Kansas City

I’ll be moving soon. Only have a few months left. New role at work. New responsibility. I’ll actually be living on my own for the first time*.

*As I type this, I realize this is not actually true. When I was a freshman in college, I lived with my brother to save money. And then he moved out the last couple months. Geez. That was a while ago.

Sure, moving to Lawrence, Kan., a place I have already lived for four years of my life is not exactly moving to Chicago or Dallas or Denver. But nonetheless, I’m moving, leaving Kansas City*, heading one county over.

Drink: MexiCoke

Here in Texas, and I suppose anywhere that might have a large Hispanic population, or even at one of those hardcore grocery stores along the lines of Whole Foods or Wild Oats, we are fortunate to have MexiCoke, the Mexican version of Coke. I thank the Lord for this creation.

Let me say this first: I love pop/soda or whatever you want to call it. Ever since I more or less gave it up in high school because I was brainwashed into thinking it would make be a better runner,* pop has been a luxury. I drink it maybe two or three times a week and look forward to it the same way I do a great meal, perhaps more so on really sunny, hot days.

Live music performances: Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

I must admit: I rarely watch late-night television. I can’t remember the last time I watched Leno or Letterman, and my samplings of Jimmy Fallon have mostly been limited to some viral highlights — like the time he went full Neil Young and performed “Whip My Hair” with Bruce Springsteen. Thing is, I don’t think this is changing, either. And, yet, I’m still an all-time sucker for a solid live-music performance. And on Thursday, someone pointed out that Fallon’s NBC website archives all the performances into an easy playlist.*

Why, yes, Paul Rudd was once in a French commercial for Super Nintendo

The title of this post may be the most bizarre thing I’ve ever written. No, really. Paul Rudd. Kansas City’s Paul Rudd. French commercial. Super Nintendo*. Wait, what?

*The best part: I once owned F-Zero, the futuristic racing game Rudd is playing at the beginning of the commercial.

I actually interweaved my way to this commercial through a Twitter link about Jack Black appearing in an old Atari commercial. Meh. But then there was Rudd, sitting on the side of the webpage, clutching a controller with a funny grin on his face. And, well, once you’ve seen Paul Rudd in a French commercial for Super Nintendo, you just can’t go back.
